Summer 2015 Intern

Walter A. Gorra, a 2011 Boettcher Scholar currently enrolled in the BS/MS program in structural engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will be this year's summer intern. He is currently 21 years old and is also double-majoring in Jazz Piano Performance.

Previous Work Experience:

Glenwood Structural and Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering Intern) - Summer 2014
Worked as an intern developing the following skills: Load tracking, Beam sizing, Footing design and CAD. The internship involved being part of a structural team that designed custom homes in Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley of western Colorado.

Gamba and Associates Engineering (Assistant Surveyor and Draftsman) - Summer 2012
Worked as an assistant surveyor and draftsman for a western Colorado civil engineering firm. The internship involved the following: Boundary Surveys, Improvement Surveys and Topo Surveys for various projects throughout the western slope of Colorado. GPS and Total Stations were employed, and drafting of legal descriptions was an everyday necessity.

Private. Heavy Equipment Operator and Construction crew-worker - Summer 2008, 2009 and 2010
Worked as a backhoe operator and laborer during high school on a private garage and apartment in Paonia, Colorado. There, he was initially exposed to the civil engineering profession and witnessed the completion of the project from initial surveys to utilities installment and framing. This experience gave Mr. Gorra a practical understanding of construction materials and concepts.

  • 1st Place Award for Freshman Design Project at ITLL Design Expo 2012 

 Other Interests:

  • Jazz Pianist - Selected twice to perform at the Telluride Jazz Festival as a Telluride All-Star.  Performed at Five Points, Jazz Aspen Snowmass, Puerto Rico Heineken, and Monterrey Next Generation Jazz Festivals. Produced and performed at a Jazz Benefit concert with his septet and with featured guest Paquito D'Rivera, a 15 time grammy award winner and NEA Jazz Master.  Member of CU Boulder Jazz Ensembles and Combos, performed with Calixto Oviedo, grammy-nominated Cuban drummer and percussionist and leader of my own working jazz group.
  • Fly-fishing and Big Game Hunting
  • Martial Arts - Practiced martial arts since age 12, currently 1st Level Red Belt, working towards 1st Level Black Belt in Western Tang Soo Do Karate
