The Larkspur Residence is a mid sized Aspen home on a sloping
site with many design features requiring extensive thought and attention to detail. The garage area required a two story conventional
cast-in-place concrete retaining wall which we analyzed with finite element software to make use of the plan geometry and
resolve into the structure for horizontal support via the elevated structural garage floor.
As a result
of the site and architectural features, the plan was irregular in shape, with various levels and steps, and perimeters of
levels were offset introducing not only vertical support challenges but lateral load system challenges as well. Shear walls
were vertically offset requiring careful detailing and drags in diaphragms for a proper lateral design. Support for interior
and exterior stone, including arches, required a bit of detailing flair, as was exterior structural architectural timber work
The roof, with its many lines and details utilizes a mix of pre-engineered trusses with stick framing that achieved visual
interest with economy.
