Raising the first bent

Interior view of the riding space

Rising Hearts Ranch Riding Arena

The Rising Hearts Ranch Riding Arena in Silt, Colorado is a spectacular facility used for cutting horse training and competition events. The size of the metal building and corresponding reactions provided the most salient challenges of the project. The bents of the main arena clear span 165 feet and the length is 300 feet. In addition, there is a buildout for boarding stalls covering 40 feet x150 feet.

Outward horizontal loads were 120 kips while uplift loads were 90 kips. This required anchor rods 1 3/4 inches in diameter engaged by the tie beam reinforcement. There is no slab for horizontal restraint and the tie beams had to be held below the special turf needed for riding. Detailing the critical reinforcing steel to constructable standards in a mountain winter environment was a unique but successful task.
